They’re all the same when you boil them down...
- To improve our lives.
- To change our lives.
- To boost our lives.
- To lift our lives.
And most commonly we want to...
- Exercise more.
- Eat better.
- Save money.
- Lose weight.
- Reduce stress.
Which actually boils down to...
- Feel better.
- Feel healthy.
- Feel in control.
- Feel confident.
- Feel happy.
Why only on the 1st of January?
Why do we wait?
Why do we wait to make this firm decision to do something for ourselves?
And on the 1st of January why do we become so determined to solve things?
More often than not our New Year's Resolutions are the ONE thing we don’t stay committed to.
And all the fitness and wellness companies around the place know that.
They know it is the perfect time to pounce.
They plan their strategies and patiently wait for this special time of the year.
And you won’t feel like they are taking advantage of you.
Because they use your emotions to entice you.
So you become their “low hanging fruit”.
They know you’ll make a snap decision to commit to something.
Particularly if you are feeling emotional about your aims.
So they give you a great big discount.
So big and generous that it is waaaay too hard to ignore.
And they bloody know you won’t stick at it.
The stats are insane for the stickability and drop off rates.
And they make a shit load of money.
Using your emotions to make lots of dollars.
For doing jack shit to support you.
And certainly not caring about you.
And how are you left feeling?
- In control?
I’m going to guess you are left feeling
- Out of control.
- Like nothing works for you.
It genuinely pisses me off.
So yes, I am your annoying cheerleader.
But, like I have said before, not the one you want to punch in the face.
Because, I don’t care if you “slip up”.
I want you to love life.
I want you to find something that works for you.
I honestly don’t care if it is Collective Upside or a boutique wellness class with goats that keeps you coming back or walking your dog while rocking out to Usher.
Your feelings, not mine.
So, if you want cake, bloody eat it!
And I savour every delicious mouthful of it!
It’s the long game you need to keep your eye on.
Stay committed to how you feel.
How you feel in the moment.
How you want to feel in the future.
It’s yours for the taking.
No one and no one thing can make you feel happy.
This is all you lady.
And you can bloody do this.
It’s not easy.
You’ll have bad days.
Many I’m sure.
But don’t wait to try again next January.
Flip the switch.
Park the shitty down on yourself feelings.
And channel your inner bestie.
You are a force of nature.
The best kind. ♥︎
Be kind to yourself.
Remember that all lives ebb and flow.
Make sure you cast your “is this bull shit” lens on the social world before believing everything you see, especially the deals and discounts that “just happen” to show up after you have thoroughly enjoyed your Christmas meals with your loved ones.
Because you shouldn’t be left feeling bad.
And you shouldn’t be the prey just because you’ve decided to make a change.
You should be empowered and uplifted to feel your best and live your best life.
Let’s go 2021!
I don’t make resolutions.
Because I NEVER stick to them.
Then I feel like I really don’t achieve, have failed and let myself down.
But what I do now is reflect on the year that has been and I choose ONE word to guide me as I move through the next year that links to what I want to achieve.
In 2019 it was Connect (with my children, my friends, my family, myself and with colleagues).
In 2020 it was Hustle (to move my ass, to be relentless and resilient, to find new avenues and opportunities).
These words have really helped me move with intention and purpose.
They also help for a quick check in of how I am going, instead of trying to remember all the resolutions on my list.
I will let you know what I come to for 2021’s word. 🙂
